Chocho no Basho

When the blue skies shine on the hot summer days,
And the sun is busy dropping thick rays,
Your face is always so playful in the wildflower fields,
Thick hair dancing with your movements, a smile that never yields.

Sweet, innocent, beautiful butterfly.
Your bright happiness never lets you cry…
I watch as you flit through the sun-soaked flowers…
Your joyful laughter chasing away the hours.

You flutter to me smiling and run your hands along my face…
You bring me joy too sweet for anything to replace…

Butterfly…
As you dance through the fields your fingers collect a bouquet.
How many flowers does a butterfly touch in a day?
And now the swirling clouds gather thickly above you.
Rain you loved… Wings still carry as water soaks you through.

We’d spend our summers playing in the sweet wildflowers,
Laughing, running in the rain, basking in the sun’s showers…
Eyes shining, you always brought me tugging at my arm,
Forever I knew there we’d be safe from harm.

So flutter to me, smiling, and run your hands along my face…
And bring me joy too sweet for anything to replace.

Butterfly…
Too fragile to cage… But you won’t always be free…
As the forests are falling and you hurt when you see
Your freedom ripping away, you cling to your wings,
But as the field glows in embers, only stinging flames it brings.
The fiery heat drove me back as I could only stare…
I could only watch as the flames mocked you there.

Butterfly…
The clouds swelling in the sky…
And it was the only tear from your eye.
You never cry…
The flickering overcame even your delicate fluttering.
The dark swirls broke when you faded… Too late… the gentle shimmering…
You loved the rain…

I’ll always return to you, this place,
Butterfly…

And you still flutter to me, smiling, and run your hands along my face.
You bring me joy every time to fill my heart… the empty space…

Butterfly… flutter by…
Dance with me once more…
